Cellular Trend Watch: June – October 2010

It has been a while we have analyzed on the cellular subscriber statistics. This post shall take a look at the trend onwards from June (Q2 end) to latest release of  October numbers.
In June 2010, the total subscriber base stood at around 800k less the 100 million mark with Mobilink leading the market followed by Telenor. Ufone and Warid took the third and fourth place respectively with only a little difference between their market share. Zong was last with a market share of around 6.7 million. This was the market share position at Q2 end.
Towards the end of July 2010, the Pakistan Mobile Industry crossed the landmark of 100 million subscribers.

Wi-Tribe Ranked No.1 in Quality by PTA

In its 2010 annual report, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced that wi-tribe Pakistan successfully ranked number one in both the ‘Technology Neutral’ and ‘Technology-wise’ categories for highest Quality of Service, despite being the youngest broadband company, after just over one year of launching commercial services. PTA’s acknowledgment of wi-tribe’s service quality emphasizes that the company is passionate about delivering nothing short of excellence to its customers.
To celebrate this achievement, PTA Chairman, Dr. Mohammed Yaseen, was invited by wi-tribe Pakistan’s CEO, Mustafa Peracha and his team for a cake-cutting ceremony at wi-tribe’s head office in Islamabad. During the ceremony, wi-tribe’s CEO Mustafa Peracha expressed his delight on the recent achievement, stating, “I am elated about wi-tribe’s success in Pakistan. I’m also thankful to PTA for recognizing our effort to take broadband to the next level.”

Hoax Calls – PTCL Warns Customers

Hoax calls have been part of our society from quite some time. At many occurrences unknown individuals pretend to be representing cellular companies call and announce live competitions and prizes for subscribers. The trends has been carried on SMSs also. In today’s newspaper PTCL warns its customer to be very careful and vigilant when receiving and responding to suspicious messages or phone calls. Details in the following PR.
It has come to the knowledge of PTCL management that some unknown individuals are making hoax calls to PTCL subscribers claiming to be the representatives of PTCL and announcing huge cash prizes for subscribers.Read more

Telenor’s CSR Initiatives for Pakistan in 2010

Telenor has been doing a great job with corporate social responsibility initiatives in Pakistan. We’ve covered those in the past here, here and here. There are two recent noteworthy CSR initiatives that we want to share. The first is about a new agreement between Telenor and Red Cross which will provide funds for flood relief in Pakistan. Second is about using communication technology to bring together various organizations working on disability.
Telenor and the Norwegian Red Cross have signed an agreement making Telenor a Red Cross’ key partner for the next three years. The 3-year agreement provides NOK 1.5 million in annual relief assistance to Pakistan. Jon Fredrik Baksaas, President and CEO at Telenor, said:
The flood disaster in Pakistan, where we have operations, has had a strong effect on us, and the efforts of the Red Cross to get the country on its feet again have been formidable. Through their helpline services and their work with digital bullying, the organisation has proven themselves to be a relevant and strong collaborative partner for Telenor.

[Poll] Ufone SMS Service Issue

Ufone customers are facing serious issues with the SMS service from past few hours. The whole complaint thread can be followed at their facebook fanpage and twitter mentions. It is being said that the problem has been around from past many days. Comments include all the way from hilarious (innko pakkar paakkkra k peetooo. spend millions on ads, spend zero on service) to outright anger. When you have over 241,000 “fans” then these kind of comments should be expected.
PTA please pay attention to the customer grievances.

Jazz Jazba [Such?? Such!] Mobilink’s Youth Segment Package

So the Such?? Such bill boards around the city come from the launch campaign of Mobilink Jazz’s youth centric segment Jazba. The youth segmentation in Pakistan started with Telenor’s Djuice, which was followed by Glow by Warid and then came Ufone with Uth.
Jazba (means passion in urdu) is indeed a vibrant name to attract the youth. The tag line it gets is “Such Apnao, Jazba Jagao!”

Ufone which was earlier offering WAP based mobile banking services with Habib Bank Limited is now offering the same on USSD. The services offered via Upayments include:
- Pay your Utility bills
- Make Utility bill enquiries
- ULoad any Ufone number
- Pay your Ufone Postpay bill
- Check your HBL bank account balance
- View a mini bank statement of your HBL accounts
All Ufone subscribers with HBL bank accounts can use the service by USSD code *808#.

Mobilink and HTC HD7 Launch

In a recent press release about the launch of HTC HD7, Mobilink reminded us about a history of firsts with handsets. This made me think – is it really that big of a deal to be the first carrier to launch a phone? Its one thing if you are an exclusive carrier but I doubt that it makes a big difference over the long run. Would you switch mobile network operator just to get your hands on a new phone?
